About SmartBedz
Background
The SmartBedz brand has been developed by brother's Mark and Jeremy who were born and brought up in Suffolk on their parent's poultry farm. Other sidelines to this business were rearing turkeys and breeding rabbits and sheep. From an early age Mark and Jeremy would spend their spare time helping on the farm and learning how to look after all the various animals. It was in this environment that the brother's learnt to love and respect the English countryside and were taught the importance of preserving their heritage. Living on a farm pets always played an important part of family life as they still do. Today Jeremy and his wife have a smallholding where they keep chickens, turkeys, sheep and pigs amongst others as a hobby.
In 1985, after having followed their own chosen careers Mark and Jeremy decided to join forces in a new business and are still working together to this day. It was during this period, whilst wishing to diversify their company, that Mark and Jeremy realised there were real environmental issues that needed to be addressed in the production of cat litters.
Traditionally materials used for cat litter have consisted of or contain clays, silica's, sodium bentonite, perfumes, chemicals or synthetic additives which besides the environmental damage caused by their extraction can lead to respiratory problems. Much of the raw material for these litters is either mined (or even worse strip mined) and then needs to be disposed of in landfill sites - there have been claims that some of these materials are known carcinogens. Their research also found that many of the litters were bulky, dusty and rather ineffective in use. Further study and experimentation concluded that whilst there are now some more environmentally friendly products available on the market many of these do not generally perform very well. With consumer trends towards convenience, Mark and Jeremy spotted an opportunity for an environmentally friendly cat litter that would also be suitable as a bedding or litter for a range of other pets.
With their good knowledge base and proven attention to detail in business Mark and Jeremy set about finding a solution. The result was SmartBedz, a totally environmentally friendly and easily disposable litter made entirely from straw, itself an agricultural by-product.
Smartbedz straw pellets absorb urine extremely rapidly and are capable of locking in large quantities in their fine fibres. As a consequence urine is only exposed to oxygen for a very short period of time, dramatically slowing down the breakdown of the urine into ammonia by bacteria.

The straw used for our pellets is a natural by-product of agricultural production and is available year after year without any harm to the environment thus eliminating the need for harmful mining and landfill.
We are committed to providing the best quality product. This begins with selecting the finest quality straw, which is then stored under cover after harvest to maintain it in excellent condition. Comprehensive dust extraction throughout processing and heat treatment ensure a top class product.
Our product is entirely natural and sustainable, from the pellets through to the packaging material.
The resulting pellets are 100% naturally pressed straw with no additives which can be disposed of after use in a responsible manner.
