My rabbit will nibble on just about anything I put in his hutch - is it safe if they eat some SmartBedz pellets if I use it as rabbit litter?
Yes, it's completely safe. In fact SmartBedz rabbit litter can actually benefit your rabbit if your pet does munch on it. The pellets are made out of straw and as they are high fibre, they will aid your rabbit's digestion. You will also need to supply your rabbit with fresh food and water in addition to this.

What size pellets should I use for rabbit litter?
You can use either size. Smaller pellets are most suitable for small animals such as mice and hamsters. Larger pellets are most suitable for large animals such as cats and dogs. Rabbits are in between these two so either may be used.
I'm wondering how much to order - how long will a bag of SmartBedz rabbit litter last?
How long a bag of SmartBedz will last really depends on how many rabbits you keep, how big the hutch is and how often you clean out your pet. The great thing about SmartBedz is that it is easy to spot clean your rabbit's hutch by removing the soiled pellets with a scoop and replacing them with clean ones. The feedback is that a 10kg bag of SmartBedz will last one rabbit using a litter tray approximately 2 months!
I'm not too worried about odour control as my rabbits live outside - is there still a benefit to using SmartBedz as a rabbit litter?
Yes, there are lots of other benefits. SmartBedz acts as insulation for outside hutches, which is especially important if the hutch is outside in cold weather. A layer of SmartBedz will need to be supplemented by a top layer of soft nesting material to keep your rabbits warm and secure in their sleeping quarters.
Rabbits are also very clean animals and as they spend most of their time in their hutches they need odour control to stop the build up of ammonia. As SmartBedz is super absorbent and can soak up four times its weight in liquid, it will help keep smells at bay and also works to keep your rabbit dry.
As SmartBedz is so effective at controlling odour and keeping your rabbit dry, the hutch will not need cleaning so often. Instead you can easily identify and remove the dirty pellets and replace the fresh ones and give the hutch a more through cleanse once a week.
I've been told not to use straw as rabbit litter because of the sharp stalks - but SmartBedz is made of straw - is it safe?
Yes, SmartBedz is made from straw but it is pulverised and then compressed into pellets, so there are no sharp ends that can harm your rabbit. It is soft enough for your rabbit to trample in and bed down on.
My son has allergies. I am worried as SmartBedz is made of straw. Will it aggravate them?
SmartBedz is virtually a dust-free product. The dust is extracted before it is compressed into pellets so it provides a great alternative to natural straw, hay and sawdust which is very dusty.
I want to use SmartBedz for litter and bedding for my rabbit? Can I do that?
As SmartBedz rapidly soaks up liquid it is an ideal product to use as a base layer in the hutch to absorb water spills and urine.
However as rabbits like to make a nest, in addition to SmartBedz we recommend you use a top layer of soft nesting material in your pet?s sleeping quarters, so they can burrow into it or pull it around themselves.
This top layer can be hay, or if you have allergies there are other alternatives. Shredded newspaper or strips of fabric, for example, will also keep your rabbit warm.
After cleaning out my rabbit's cage, my husband asked to use SmartBedz as composting. Is this possible?
Yes. As SmartBedz is an agricultural by-product, it is completely bio-degradable so composting is a great way of disposing of your rabbit's dirty litter. In fact we would recommend it.
I know that mould is toxic to rabbits and I am worried that as SmartBedz is made of straw it could be harmful to my pet. Is it?
No, SmartBedz is completely harmless. During the manufacturing process it is heat treated and this works to destroys bugs and bacteria that may grow in numbers in warm or moist conditions in the hutch.
I have heard that some products contain perfumes or additives. Does SmartBedz?
